Haji Ali Dargah - Mumbai

The Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and a tomb situated near the Worli, Mumbai (India). It is an islet and heart of the Mumbai city. The dargah is one of the most recognized landmarks of Mumbai and most scared mosque for muslim in all over India. The Dargah was built in 1431 AD. This mosque stands in the middle of the sea with only a narrow path leading to it, giving it an ethereal look. It was built to the honour of the Muslim saint Haji Ali. There are separate praying rooms for ladies and gents are available as per the Muslim traditions.

The Haji ali Dargah is set 500 yards into the sea and can be reached only in low tide. The Haji Ali mausoleum has an offshore location, opposite the Mahalakshmi racecourse. During high tide, the connecting path of Haji Ali Dargah is submerged in water, giving the impression that the mosque and tomb are floating out at sea in splendid isolation. This is the Haji Ali Dargah, the floating tomb of a wealthy Mohammedan merchant who renounced his worldly ways before embarking on a pilgrimage to Mecca.

From all over India, hundreds of worshippers came here and bow their forehead against the richly brocaded red and green chaddar (cloth’s sheet) covering the tomb, lying in an exquisite silver frame supported by marble pillars. Dargah is decorated with very good mirror work with blue, green, yellow chips of glass. The glass arranged in kaleidoscopic patterns interspersed with Arabic patterns which spells the names of Allah (God). About 42,000/- pilgrims visit the shrine on Thursdays and Fridays. Non Muslims are also allowed to walk on the causeway and into the mosque compound. Most of the structure is corroded due to saline winds blowing from the surrounding sea but day by day visitors is increasing in haji ali Dargah.
