India Gate

India Gate was built in the memory of 90000 soldiers who laid down their lives during World War-I. It is also known as the All India War Memorial. India Gate was constructed and designed by Edwin Lutyens. It is situated at Rajpath, New Delhi, India. This place has an identity of its own. This is a Monument, which is 42 m high. It was built to commemorate the Indian and British soldiers who died in the World War-I and the Afghan Wars. The names of the soldiers who died in these wars are inscribed on the walls. It was completed in 1931. Amar jawan jyoti (The flame of the immortal warrior) is burning under it since 1971, which marks the Unknown soldiers Tomb.
Another memorial is Amar Jawan Jyoti. It was added much later after India had said goodbye to its imperial rulers. It is in the form of a flame that burns day and night under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who perished in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 and 1971. The entire arch stands on a low base of red Bharatpur stone. It rises in stages to a huge cornice, beneath which are inscribed imperial suns. Above on both sides is inscribed India, flanked by dates MCMXIV (1914 Left) and to the right, MCMXIX (1919).
